FAQ:
What are GLP-1 medications?
These are weekly injectable medications used primarily for weight loss and management of Diabetes. GLP-1 is a naturally occurring hormone that is released from the gut after eating.
How do GLP-1 medications help promote weight loss?
When injected, GLP-1 medications produce the same effects as natural GLP-1. Some of those effects include:
Are there any other benefits to GLP-1 medications?
Research has found that taking a GLP-1 medication may lower the risk of certain serious health conditions, such as kidney disease, heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Many people who take these medications also see their blood pressure improve, but it is not clear whether that is from the medicine or as a result of weight loss.
What are the potential side effects of GLP-1 medications?
As with any medication, there is a risk of side effects. The most common include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache. These side effects tend to improve over time. You will be provided with an anti-nausea prescription when you start your medication and may take it if needed.
How fast will I lose weight and what dose will I need?
All patients start out on the lowest dose of medication and stay on this dose for at least a month. Most experts agree that a safe rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. Some patients have lost 40+ pounds without ever increasing their dose. This is highly variable from person to person, and dosing will be determined by your provider based on your individual needs.
What is the difference between Tirzepatide and Semaglutide? Which one will I be taking?
Both medications are in the same drug class and work very similarly. There is evidence to support that Tirzepatide is a little better than Semaglutide for weight loss and side effects are also typically more mild with Tirzepatide. You can switch from one to the other if needed. Your provider will give you more direction at your consultation based on your individual needs.
How can I optimize weight loss while on the medication?
GLP-1 medications are simply a tool to optimize weight loss. For safe, effective, and healthy weight loss it is important to incorporate a healthy diet and increased physical activity. Most people who take these medications begin seeing results quickly, and they feel more motivated to continue a healthy lifestyle.
How do I know if I am a candidate?
The first step is to schedule a consultation. You will fill out a health history form and discuss your health and goals with the provider.
Who should not take GLP-1 medications?
The following are contraindications for this medication:
If you have a history of significant kidney, liver, or pancreatic issues you may need additional medical monitoring while on the medication, or you may not be a candidate.
Do I have to sign up for a “program” or “membership” to get started?
No.
How will I receive my medication?
Most of the time your medication will be delivered in a small cooler to your home. If your dose is changed, we may want you to come in the office for a very brief instruction on the dosage change. This is to avoid overdosing of medication. Safety is our top priority.
How often will I need to follow up with my provider while on the medication?
After your consultation, if it is determined that you are a candidate for the medication, we start you on weekly injections. We then see you again for a follow up in 4 weeks. After that, follow up is scheduled every 3 mos until you reach your goal and start maintenance dosing.
I don’t think I can do injections myself, needles freak me out! Can I come in the office for my injection?
Most patients, even those with considerable needle anxiety, are able to do the injections. However we can usually have you come in and one of our medical assistants can administer your injection.
What Pharmacy does my medication come from?
We use a compounding pharmacy in Virginia, Akina Phamacy, for our patients. We have been using them for over a year with great results.
